On a sidenote, Ser Patrek responded to Jon's statement by saying "No man has ever had cause to question my courage. Although Jon wasn't being sarcastic, he just simply said that with wildlings, the tradition is to steal their bride to prove strength, cunning and courage. Good catch, about the princess in the castle guarded by a monster, that could be how Ser Partek saw it. I think it is one of the few things in the GRRM series that is exactly what it looks like. I really don't think there's any big warging mystery to it. So what does Ser Patrek do? He completely misses that Jon is being sarcastic, and takes his sword and strolls right into the tower and starts hacking at Wun Wun, who proceeds to swing Patrek around like a rag doll until his head is a pulpy mess. A knight wants her hand in marriage, but first he must rescue her from an evil giant guarding her from being "rescued". A beautiful princess is imprisoned in a castle tower. This becomes very reminiscent of a very childlike fairytale. Wun Wun was posted in the bottom of val's "prison" tower. Jon had told Leathers, the Wildling he had befriended, who spoke the language of the giants (and who he used to communicate to Wun Wun through) to tell Wun Wun to guard Val against anyone who would try to hurt her - specifically Queen Selyse's men, from trying to rape her or what not. Jon, jokingly, sarcastically, told him that he better "steal" her, if he wanted her to accept him as her man. Or maybe told him he wanted to marry her. Ser Patrek asked Jon if he could marry Val.
